Choosing a peptide supplier
A due-diligence checklist: COAs, batch IDs, dispatch, and the claims a serious vendor will refuse to make.

Choosing a peptide supplier is really a background check. Look at their published certificates of analysis, the methods they use, how they trace batches, and how clearly they say the products are for research use only. This article is a checklist a researcher can work through before buying.
What should you ask before placing an order?
Ask whether a certificate of analysis is available for the specific batch. Ask which methods were used, and whether the supplier can trace the batch to its source. Also ask how the product is packed and shipped. A supplier that answers these clearly is easier to judge than one that does not.
Published certificates of analysis
The most important check is whether a supplier publishes certificates of analysis at all. A certificate gives a batch-specific record of the tests done on a particular production run. If a supplier can show these, it shows that quality control is part of the process, not an afterthought.
Look at whether you can see the certificate before you buy, or only on request. Check whether it matches the batch a customer will actually receive. A generic or old document is far less useful than one that fits the product and batch number in hand. A supplier that publishes its documents openly, such as through a COA submission page, makes this check easy for the researcher.
Analytical testing methods
A certificate is only as good as the methods behind it. The two methods that matter most are HPLC for purity and mass spectrometry for identity. HPLC is a method that sorts the parts of a sample. Mass spectrometry is a method that measures the weight of molecules. A useful certificate reports both, because together they show that the main part is present at a stated purity and is the intended peptide.
Note whether the testing was done by the supplier's own lab or by third-party laboratory analysis. Independent testing carries more weight. It separates the analysis from the party selling the product. Asking who ran the tests is a fair question to put to any supplier.
Batch traceability
Traceability means a product can be linked back to a specific batch, and that the batch has its own records. Look for products that carry a batch number. Look for a certificate that names the same number. That lets you match the documents to the physical product that arrives.
Beyond the certificate, traceability means the supplier can account for a batch across production, testing and dispatch. If a batch needs to be recalled or is queried, a supplier with good traceability can pull up the relevant records. This is a strong sign of a disciplined operation.
Packaging and shipping practice
Research peptides are generally shipped as freeze-dried powder in sealed vials. They are typically kept cool or in the fridge after mixing. Packaging should protect the vial from physical damage. Where the product needs it, packaging should keep the right temperature during transit. How a product arrives tells you a lot about how the supplier handles things.
Check that the packaging is clean and professional, and that vials are sealed and labelled clearly. Check that the certificate travels with the shipment or is available online. Shipping may not be the first thing you look at, but it decides whether the product arrives in a usable state.
Customer support
A good supplier answers questions. Before you order, you should be able to get clear answers about documents, lead times and product specs. After you order, support matters for tracking, delivery issues and any mismatch between what you ordered and what arrived.
Look for a supplier with clear ways to get in touch and practical pages to read, such as an about page and a straightforward shop. A supplier that is open tends to give more reliable after-sales support than one that is hard to reach. The about page and the shop are reasonable places to start. They show how the supplier sees itself and how seriously it takes the work.
Transparency of information
A related sign of a responsible supplier is how openly it shares information. Documents that are published, not hidden on request, clear product pages, and honest and current answers all suggest a supplier with little to hide. Hiding things, by contrast, forces every choice to be taken on trust. That is rarely a comfortable spot for a researcher.
How much a supplier explains its own processes, testing and position is itself a data point. A supplier that makes checking easy is telling you it expects to be checked. That attitude tends to line up with better practice across the board.
Research-use-only positioning
A responsible supplier marks its products clearly as research use only. The language on the site, the product pages and the terms of supply should all make this plain. The products are for laboratory research, not for human or veterinary use. That framing is a compliance signal as much as a marketing message.
Clear research-use-only wording tells the researcher the supplier knows the rules these products sit under and handles them in that spirit. If a supplier blurs that line or makes medical claims, that is a warning sign. Serious researchers watch for these signals carefully.
Putting the checklist together
No single factor decides the choice. Read the checklist as a whole. A supplier that does well on documents, testing, traceability, packaging, support and positioning is one you can work with in reasonable confidence. A supplier that falls short on several of these should be set aside, whatever the price.
